It was another great night of fights brought to you by the folks at Full Force. For the 27th installment of Untamed, Mike Littlefield proved again why he is arguably the best match-maker on the New England scene. In addition to the fights, on hand to take in the action were some local MMA stars including: Gabriel Gonzaga, Marcus ‘The Irish Hand Grenade’ Davis, Joe and Dany Lauzon, Tamden McCrory, Erik Charles and Full Force Middleweight champ and overall bad-ass Nate ‘The Animal’ Kittredge.
The main card started out with a contest pitting (CNY MMA) Jamie Friar against (CCFA) Andy Amaral. This fight primarily took place on the ground, which did not work in Amaral’s favor as he got submitted via triangle choke at 4:14 of rd 1. It was a big night for Team Burgess, as both “Mr. Nasty” Jay Fortier and “The Soultaker” Jonathan Sola won their bouts. Fortier took on Jonas Fernandes (BMAC) in a fight that would end amid controversy. “Mr Nasty” had secured an arm-bar (that he was insistent on getting) and the Ref stopped the fight, Fernandes jumped to his feet protesting he had not tapped but after watching the instant-replay it was clear that he had. Another big win for Fortier! Sola, who had the best ring entrance song of the night (Kenny Rogers: The Gambler) took on the always dangerous Chris Ramos (CNY MMA) in what would be a hard fought match. In the end, Sola proved to be to strong for the much smaller Ramos. “The Soultaker” won the first 2 rounds, as he controlled the fight on the ground and continually looked for submissions, finally securing an arm-bar at 2:19 of rd 3. If Ramos dropped to 145 or even 135 he would be an absolute beast!!
Next up was the battle for the Light Heavyweight Title featuring Team Irish fighter Travis Bartlett against Jerry Spiegal (Team Spiegal). This fight was short lived as Bartlett came out firing! It looked as though one of the early bombs thrown by Bartlett struck Spiegal in the back of the head, so that may have had an an initial affect. Spiegal seemed to recover but soon after Bartlett had him up against the cage and unleashed a flurry of punches before the fight was stopped at 0:27 of the 1st rd. Bartlett wins the Light Heavyweight Title via TKO.
In between title fights was the Lightweight Title qualifier which featured Marc Stevens (CNY MMA) vs. Hitalo Machado (Best Way/ ATT). Stevens would like nothing more than a rematch with Will Kerr and now he’s got it. Machado, would not go down easy as the BJJ practitioner would give Stevens a tough time of it. After taking the 1st rd Stevens would bloody Machado in the 2nd with some brutal ground-and-pound. Machado survived the 2nd but in the 3rd Stevens was able to get the full mount and pound out a victory as Machado could no longer defend himself. Stevens gets the win via TKO at 4:13 of rd 3. During the post-fight interview Stevens let it be known he was unhappy with the 1st match with Kerr as he said, “How many people want to see me chase Will Kerr around for 25 minutes? Maybe this time he’ll fight to win and not fight to not-lose”!! Sounds like a challenge to me.
On to the much-anticipated main event. Battling it out for the Featherweight Title would be Chris ‘Shocka’ Grandmaison vs. Aguileno Brandao. This fight would live up to the hype as both guys fought hard for the entire 5 rounds. Surprisingly, (to me anyway) Grandmaison was content on taking this fight to the ground, granted he is a ground-and-pound fighter but when fighting a guy like Brandao, who is so accomplished at BJJ, your always one mistake away from getting submitted. Brandao had a significant reach advantage over the much shorter Grandmaison but he wasn’t able to use it effectively. ‘Shocka’ was able to take down Brandao at will and as the fight went on, he started landing big shots while standing over his opponent. That said, Brandao looked for submissions throughout the fight and had Grandmaison in some parculiar positions, each time Grandmaison would either turn out,or slam his way out of them. When all was said and done Grandmaison pretty much dominated every round and looked very good doing it. He is now the Full Force Featherweight Champion!
