UNCASVILLE, CT — Josh LaBerge defeated Chris Simmons and Good, De La Cruz, Reynolds, Ortiz, and Reis each advanced their standings in the Bellator Fighting Champtionships Tournament.
Josh LaBerge, of team Gillett, was declared the winner by unanimous decision after three grueling rounds of ground fighting. LaBerge agreed to fight Simmons, who boasted an impressive record of 6-1 with his only loss being to Ken Stone, on short notice and only six days after a unanimous decision victory at USFL’s “Springfield Massacre.” Each man came out strong at the start of round one. Simmons scored a take down and initiated the ground fight. The rest of round one, and the majority of round two and three, was a grappling match. LaBerge was able to control the fight on the ground, defend against Simmons’ submission attempts and maintain top position for the majority of the fight. His wrestling and ground and pound were too much for Simmons and won LaBerge the decision.
Fan favorite Lyman Good submitted Hector Urbina in round two with a rear naked choke in what was one of the most exciting fights of the night. Both men came out strong in round one. Ubrina attempted a take down after a brief exchange. Lyman sprawled and clinched with Urbina against the cage. A time-out was called by the referee after Urbina was struck with an unintentional knee to the groin. When the fight resumed, Good scored a take down and attempted some ground and pound, but was ineffective due to Ubrina’s guard defense. Urbina was able to bring the fight back to their feet and the round ended with Good throwing a flurry of punches. Good continued to push the pace in round two, scoring a quick take down and landing strikes from the mount position. In an unsuccessful escape attempt, Urbina gave up his back. Good secured the rear mount position and sunk in a rear naked choke that ended the fight.
Jimmie Rivera won a submission victory over Willie Gates. Matt Makowski, Oscar De La Cruz, Jorge Ortiz, and Wilson Reis each won unanimous decision victories. Jesse Juarez and Eric Rynolds defeated their opponents by technical knockout.
